This project began with an offhand comment from my daughter, who at age three announced she wanted to start a business called “Sock City.” Naturally, I jumped on the opportunity to help bring her vision to life. There was no logo—just a name, an idea, and a lot of pink (her favorite color… followed by more pink). Personally, I think she rocks mustard tones, but that’s beside the point.

I asked her what she thought socks should be, and her answer was simple: “fun and for everybody.” That was enough direction for me to get started. As a proud dad and creative, I took this as a chance to build a playful, inclusive brand identity rooted in her spirit. The first step? Establishing a logo that could grow with her ambition.

The Rules of Engagement

Building a style guide for Sock City started with defining the brand’s personality—fun, inclusive, and playful, with a hint of structure to keep things feeling polished. I selected a bold, cheerful color palette (inspired by my daughter’s love of pink) and paired it with a modern typeface system that’s both legible and expressive.

The guide establishes clear rules for logo usage, typography, color application, and spacing to ensure brand consistency across all platforms. It’s a foundational tool designed to help any designer maintain visual harmony while expanding the brand.

The hard part was done

The cornerstone of Sock City’s visual identity is the Sock Icon—a simple, memorable mark designed to stand on its own across any medium. In the stationery system, this icon plays a central role in both branding and layout structure. It’s used consistently across business cards, letterhead, envelopes, and thank-you cards to anchor the brand and drive recognition.

Each piece was designed with clarity and energy in mind. The Sock Icon helps define spatial divisions, acting as both a graphic element and a functional guide for content flow. This approach maintains a clean aesthetic while injecting personality into every interaction—whether it's a note to a customer or internal documentation.

How This Enables Campaigns

Using the Sock City branding system, I developed campaign materials that extend the brand’s personality across multiple touchpoints—maintaining consistency while allowing room for creativity and storytelling.

  • Primary Element: The Sock Icon is featured in the logo and serves as a unifying visual across all brand materials.

  • Poster Concept: "Grungy Sock Retirement" is a mock event created to showcase brand personality through humor and relatability.

  • Typography: Used a bold, rounded typeface to maintain a fun, approachable tone while ensuring clear information hierarchy.

  • Imagery: A worn sock image anchors the design visually and reinforces the event theme with a humorous twist.

  • Color & Texture: Warm orange background adds energy and contrast, while staying consistent with the brand’s defined color palette.

  • Layout Strategy: Clean alignment and intentional spacing guided by the style guide help structure the content without clutter.

  • Tone & Messaging: Copywriting reinforces the brand voice—playful, accessible, and human.
